Polymer extrusion and processing at PETUK

Extrusion

Polymer extrusion

Polymer extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process that transforms raw plastic materials e.g. washed flakes into continuous profiles (pellets).

At PET UK our main extrusion lines use strand pelletising technology. The continuous nature of the process allows for high production rates, resulting in high efficiency across our plant.

Polymer extrusion is a vital process in the plastics industry, enabling the efficient production of an array of products used in everyday life and various industrial applications.

Solid state polymerisation and IV enhancement at PETUK

Solid State Polymerisation (SSP)

SSP

Solid State Polymerisation (SSP), is a process in which the polymer chain lengths are increased by heat in the absence of oxygen and moisture, by means of vacuum in a large reactor.

The melt viscosity is tested at specific intervals using a custom designed sampler. The final product’s intrinsic viscosity (IV) is specified by our clients.

At PET UK we have 8 large reactors dedicated to this process.

The SSP technique is widely applied in industrial manufacture of bottle-grade PET, films and superior industrial fibres.

Polymer Crystallisation

Crystallisation

Polymer crystallisation is a process where polymer chains organise into a structured, repeating pattern, significantly affecting the material’s properties.

At PET UK we use differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure heat flow associated with phase transitions, providing insights into crystallisation and melting behavior.
